Jack had spent the last three hours balanced motionlessly on the top of a flagpole, head tilted back as he listened to the wind and the sound of the city below. Where is Winter? it asked. I'm here! the spirit replied, but he knew it didn't mean his physical presence. He'd had too much on his mind and too much in his heart and in that sense he had indeed been absent these last few weeks.

Eyes closed and thoughtlessly trusting, he tipped forward into open air, letting the wind catch him and hurl him upward into the misty cloud cover that scudded across the stars tonight. At his touch they thickened, fat and pale grey against the indigo backdrop and Jack swirled them up, the motions so ingrained in him they felt just like breathing. In the small hours of the morning snowflakes began to fall on the sleeping city, specks at first but then quickly becoming heavier.

Now with a fresh canvas to work with, Jack was really in his element. He could never have done something like this back home, not anywhere in his world. It would have been too strange, too inexplicable, drawn too much attention. But here on the turtle, things were different. There wasn't really a semblance of normal and Jack poured his imagination and heart into the things he wanted most to share, and from the snow rose gleaming swirls of snow and blue light, forming things of exceptional detail and delight.

By the time the sun rose, a solid three feet of the snow had blanketed the city, glistening and crisp and Jack went rocketing down the streets, rapping on doors and windows to leave spirals of frost on every surface.

"Whooohoo! Snow day! Get up sleepyheads, everyone come out and play!"

"What, skate?" She kicked off a little additional momentum, making a single loop around Kara before coming to a skid back in her original spot. This time, without the fall. A shrug followed. "Back home. It's pretty popular; most every kid who lives in a place where it snows learns eventually."

She watched curiously before striking forward to try it for herself. It was a lot easier when you just sort of flew, but it was still pretty fun.

"Does it snow a lot where you're from?"

"New York? Only every winter. And every other fall. And sometimes the beginning of spring."

"Wow. That sounds... cold." Not that the snow bothered her now, but it happened so rarely on Krypton. They kept the weather pleasant most of the year, making changes only to keep the environment stable and healthy. She mused as she floated in her skates, the blades scraping idly at the ice.

"I guess you would get used to it."

"I've always liked the cold, really." Which would explain how she could endure blizzard conditions in her usual battle uniform. Sure, it had long sleeves...but the lightweight jacket was only so warm. Same with her shorts and tights. "Winter's one of my favorite times of the year. But only when it snows."

Kara had the distinct and quite correct feeling that Zatanna's idea of winter was very different from hers. Of course, it didn't make much difference now. Even the snow wasn't near cold enough to give her goosebumps. She pushed off on the ice at the same time she glided across it. She was getting pretty good at this.

"No wonder you and Jack are friends. I almost wish he would do this more often." It was always so much fun.

Kara was looking at her very definition of Winter. The snow. The children playing. The ice skating. The snowball fights and forts and other creations scattered all across the area.

"Well, that's not the only reason. But I can tell you that he's always open to suggestions, if you ever ask him for a repeat performance sometime."

"I'll have to ask him," she agreed with a smile. She found the snow and the ice to be beautiful, even more so when it lost its bite. And the children playing was something precious to see.

"It's not home, but... I like it here." She performed a little spin on one foot, blade scraping against the ice as she smiled up at the sky. It would never replace Krypton, but it could certainly try.

"Days like these...so do I."

When she can forget about all the dangers that await them. The Emperor. The Zombies. The barrier. The Mainland.

Instead, she tried to focus on the good. Taking Kara's lead, she gradually began to push herself backwards, skates dragging along at a leisure pace.
