Jack had spent the last three hours balanced motionlessly on the top of a flagpole, head tilted back as he listened to the wind and the sound of the city below. Where is Winter? it asked. I'm here! the spirit replied, but he knew it didn't mean his physical presence. He'd had too much on his mind and too much in his heart and in that sense he had indeed been absent these last few weeks.

Eyes closed and thoughtlessly trusting, he tipped forward into open air, letting the wind catch him and hurl him upward into the misty cloud cover that scudded across the stars tonight. At his touch they thickened, fat and pale grey against the indigo backdrop and Jack swirled them up, the motions so ingrained in him they felt just like breathing. In the small hours of the morning snowflakes began to fall on the sleeping city, specks at first but then quickly becoming heavier.

Now with a fresh canvas to work with, Jack was really in his element. He could never have done something like this back home, not anywhere in his world. It would have been too strange, too inexplicable, drawn too much attention. But here on the turtle, things were different. There wasn't really a semblance of normal and Jack poured his imagination and heart into the things he wanted most to share, and from the snow rose gleaming swirls of snow and blue light, forming things of exceptional detail and delight.

By the time the sun rose, a solid three feet of the snow had blanketed the city, glistening and crisp and Jack went rocketing down the streets, rapping on doors and windows to leave spirals of frost on every surface.

"Whooohoo! Snow day! Get up sleepyheads, everyone come out and play!"

[Temeraire tries his best not to lean forward too eagerly, although it is very difficult.]

Can you really? Only I should not like to be too much trouble.

[Jack's energy is infectious, and Temeraire sits up a little straighter, nodding enthusiastically.]

Very well, then; I should like that very much.

[Temeraire watches with fascination as Jack rises into the air again. A spirit, flying without a dragon! It is something he must tell Laurence about when he arrives--and here, with all the magic in the air, the thought of his missing captain only hurts a little.

He starts a little when ice sweeps across the hillside--if seeing Jack fly had not already convinced him of the truth, then this certainly confirms it.]
How do you do that?

[He gets up, shaking melting snow off his wings, and pads up to the top of the hill, nudging the beginning of the slope gently with his nose.]

That is very special; not even any of the dragons I know can do that, although it is not outside the realm of possibility.

Do you mean to say that you control the weather? That sounds very important indeed. [Spirits controlling the weather is new and interesting, and almost certainly something his captain would dispute the existence of on principle, but Temeraire has always been open-minded. Besides, here, out in the cold, with Jack hovering in the air in front of him, the explanation is rather difficult to discredit.

He places a careful forehand at the edge of the slide, testing his weight almost hesitantly, but the ice holds firm. Satisfied, he twitches his wings once before tucking them tightly against his sides, crouching, and pushing off.

He had thought it would be like flying, but it is not like flying at all; he has little control over his direction here, and he lets out a small roar of surprise as he slides down the slope. It is not at all unpleasant, though, and his ruff is quivering as he snaps his wings back out at the end to halt his descent. It doesn't quite work, and he faceplants into the snow in a terribly undignified fashion, but he is beaming as he shakes snow from his face.]

Oh, that was terribly exciting! Thank you, Jack!

I cannot say I ever thought very much of the season before, but then winters in Dover are generally quite wet and unpleasant, and we did not have snowball fights very often, or slides.

[He eagerly half-bounds, half-flies back to the top of the hill, shaking snow off his wings in a manner more reminiscent of a dog than a dragon.]

But we should, [he adds with some determination, before he flops down and flies off down the slope again.]
