[OPEN EVENT] Weekend Winter Wonderland
Characters: All?
Date: March 8th-11th
Location: All of Keeliai
Situation: It's been a stressful month thus far for a lot of people, but Jack is determined to Make All The Happy and decides he needs to get back to his wintery roots by giving the city a proper snowing.
Warnings/Rating: People high on snow glitter?
NOTES: Actionspam OR prose, whatever is preferred! (Settings were just easier to prose.) Make your own thread headers if none of these suit! ♥
Jack had spent the last three hours balanced motionlessly on the top of a flagpole, head tilted back as he listened to the wind and the sound of the city below. Where is Winter? it asked. I'm here! the spirit replied, but he knew it didn't mean his physical presence. He'd had too much on his mind and too much in his heart and in that sense he had indeed been absent these last few weeks.
Eyes closed and thoughtlessly trusting, he tipped forward into open air, letting the wind catch him and hurl him upward into the misty cloud cover that scudded across the stars tonight. At his touch they thickened, fat and pale grey against the indigo backdrop and Jack swirled them up, the motions so ingrained in him they felt just like breathing. In the small hours of the morning snowflakes began to fall on the sleeping city, specks at first but then quickly becoming heavier.
Now with a fresh canvas to work with, Jack was really in his element. He could never have done something like this back home, not anywhere in his world. It would have been too strange, too inexplicable, drawn too much attention. But here on the turtle, things were different. There wasn't really a semblance of normal and Jack poured his imagination and heart into the things he wanted most to share, and from the snow rose gleaming swirls of snow and blue light, forming things of exceptional detail and delight.
By the time the sun rose, a solid three feet of the snow had blanketed the city, glistening and crisp and Jack went rocketing down the streets, rapping on doors and windows to leave spirals of frost on every surface.
"Whooohoo! Snow day! Get up sleepyheads, everyone come out and play!"

[She sounds a little more bitter about that than she meant to, so she lets out a breath as if to dispel it, then stands up, checking that her skates are done up properly.]
Need a hand up?
[Normally she'd just hold out her hand, but she remembers how he was about touching, so - she's asking first.]
no subject
[... he sounds a little hopeful about that, okay? And at her offer, he shakes his head.]
I'm all right. Thanks. I think I'll survive.
[He gets to his feet and-- wobbles. precariously. Because he's bambi.]

[Apparently that brief downturn of mood has passed, because she's smiling again, the comment a joke, as she steps out onto the ice, though she'll stick close until she's sure Spencer isn't going to fall on his ass in the first ten seconds.]
Let's hope so. [She'd feel bad if she got him killed ice skating, of all things. And after a brief pause:] Normally these things have barriers, which makes it easier, but you can hold onto me if you get wobbly.
[Well, he already is wobbly, but she's just putting that offer out there.]

[... he's babbling. He does that when he doesn't actually want to do something. Shoulder Morgan says, breathe, Reid. And so he steps out onto the ice.]
I'll be fine.
[He reiterates the point more to himself than to her as he puts one foot in front of the other. Fundamentally, he understands the point of ice skates.]
You know, the oldest known pair of skates is about five thousand years old? They were-- um-- recovered from a lakebed in Switzerland. Which probably doesn't bode too well as to the fate of the owner. But it's actually a very old concept.
[He's talking in full force now, at a fairly fast pace.]

Spencer.
[It's both a shush and a it's going to be fine, her tone a little more Batgirl than Steph.]
Just skate for a moment, don't distract yourself. [With all those words, even if she's starting to pick up that it's a sort of defensive response to stress.] Ice skating isn't gonna kill you, no one's gonna judge you if you aren't great at it, and if you get too bruised I'll take you to see Sep so you don't have to suffer. Okay?
[Not the best pep talk she's given, but it'll do.]
no subject
[But it is, in a weird way. So he gives it a try.
He actually gets about a meter before his arms windmill awkwardly and he loses his balance, toppling to the ice in a collection of flailing limbs.]
no subject
She'd stayed close, to keep an eye on him, and winces sympathetically when he goes down.]
You okay? [She's stopped beside him, crouching down a little to make sure he isn't broken, and she'll offer a hand up, if he wants to take it.]
no subject
[He gets to his feet (unsteadily) without taking her hand, and dusts his off against his jacket.]
I'm a little hardier than I look.
[That's probably a lie.]
no subject
[Gently teasing, as she straightens up as well.]
But hey, you nearly had it. I think you were overestimating how bad this would go.
no subject
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, right?
no subject
[So help her it's an adventure and they are going to have fun.]
no subject
[But it's just good-natured grumbling at this point. He wobbles a little and takes a tiny forward slide.]
no subject
I dunno, you haven't gotten yourself killed yet, that has to count for something.
[Whether she means ice-skating or just life in general will forever remain a mystery.
(It's both).]
no subject
Sometimes I'm pretty sure that surprises everyone I meet.
[Literally everyone.]
no subject
I wasn't that surprised. [But she's grinning, glad to have gotten a laugh.] I'm sure being a genius has gotten you out of more tricky spots than being good at punching things would have.
no subject
[For some reason, relating this story gives him a little more confidence in terms of skating.]
Hotch - that's my boss - was ready for a fight. He's-- imposing, and well-trained, but he isn't a killer the way Hardwick was. So I kind of just... started talking. Psychoanalytically. On what he'd done and why. He'd defied standard psychological profiling for [a flail of slightly lost balance] - literal decades. To this day I'm not certain how accurate I was, but he listened long enough for the change of the guard to happen.
