The majority of fires are reported as under control and repair crews start forming up to bring Keeliai back to her pre-scorched splendour. This is all well and good, but there remains a cluster of debris that crashed into the ocean drawing the attention of salvagers and Foreigners alike. Boats and teams form up and head up to scour the ocean, where the cluster rests upon an expansive and ancient coral formation and can be reached within ten metres of the surface.

That's what you think. [Not buying it Jack.] Everything cynical is stupid, because it's just them using bias to justify ignoring facts. Just as bad as people who believe everything people tell them no matter what it is.

Never heard of that type before. [So no, not familiar at all. Sounds like someone she'd like to meet though.]

Avatar? [She finds it too interesting to get bored, really.] Okay, I'll bite. How are you able to do all that?

Magic's been with me since I remember. It's part of who I am.

[There seems to be more types of magic out there than there are sub-schools of bending. Korra's so glad she doesn't have to deal with that stuff, it sounded way too complicated.]

All right. Just remember, you asked. [She's got this explanation thing down due to repeatedly hearing it since age four.] The Avatar is the spirit of the planet itself in human incarnation that keeps balance between the four nations of the world. Whenever the Avatar dies, that spirit is born in the next nation of the cycle of Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. Another duty for the Avatar aside from mastering all four elements is being the connection from our world to the Spirit World. Like an ambassador of sorts. So yeah, it’s kind of a lot for most people to take in all at once. [And of course stress comes with the roll.]

That’s exactly what bending’s like! Or at least for me. Most benders don’t really start bending their element until they start their teenage years. [No bragging in her tone or face, just more information about her world.] Usually they find a master to train under until they’re masters themselves.

What makes your magic different? [Because as far as Korra had seen it, magic was just that. Some kind of weird words and BAM, crazy stuff happens.]

[ he glances at her dress and the mud and clears his throat. his tone's faintly wry as he replies. ]

I'm, aah-- I'm afraid I wouldn't know. [ about dresses, of course. not that wearing white all the time doesn't come with it share of problems. ] But if it's payment you require...

[He smiles and ducks his head.] I stand a little outside the ordinary, in my measure. Do you?

It might, yes! I should think we could put it in water, but it may destroy the mechanics.

[ drowsily: ] Just for a nap. Promise you'll come wake me up.

[ Oh, bargaining! Stocking likes getting free stuff. ]

Some kind of compensation would be appropriate. What are you offering?

Oh, no, you misunderstand me. [ a little laugh! SILLY HER. ] I was going to say that if it's payment you require... I'm sadly unable to provide. I've little more than the clothes on my back, you see.

[ and his head, of course. it's hard to tell whether he's honestly this unwitting or he's just having a bit of fun... ]

[Aw, Dorian, he would be flattered if he knew you were so concerned. However, he is oblivious to that (and to the state of his clothes), kneeling in a pile of rubble and sifting through it eagerly.]

What is it? [Dorian immediately heads over to look.]

So you're something like a guardian deity of your world? That's definitely a lot to take in. How exactly do you keep the balance of your world intact?

Sounds like you're world's a lot more open to radical ideas. A lot of people I know just hate the idea of magic ever existing. [Take for example, her lovely father who she adores but disagrees with everything magic-related.]

It's mine, that's what. Everyone has a signature, it's all a matter of how you use the magic that's different. I draw mine from the city.

Deity? Umm, I guess? [No one's ever given the Avatar a different comparison like that.] We just all kind of see it as a natural cycle. If any of the nations upsets the balance, then it's up to the Avatar to restore that balance. Like when the Fire Nation suddenly attacked the three other three nations and almost completely killed off all the Air Nomads. They tried to make it so the reincarnation cycle of the Avatar is broken. Went on for one hundred years.

[History lessons, never did Korra think they'd come in this handy.]

So magic is like martial arts, everyone has a unique twist on their style? [Hoooold everything.] You get magic from a city??

A century? [Wow.] What's the point of doing that? Creating chaos for the sake of chaos, or some sort of twisted belief that they can rule the world through destruction?

For the basic gist of it, yes. [Whoops. Well, it wasn't a secret.] Pretty much. Once you step foot in a city I'm in, I can easily locate you no matter where you hide. You can say I become one with it. It's a lot more complicated than that.

[So the place getting trashed and people panicking? That had a nasty whiplash she had to ignore to help out.]

Probably quirky enough to be dragged into another place altogether, wouldn't you agree? I doubt being brought to a place like this is just coincidence.

[Dorian can't help but laugh a little.] I'm not so certain. I know someone here who is completely, entirely ordinary. The only reason I can imagine for bringing him anywhere is if you want someone talked into confusion.

World ruling through conquering the two remaining nations, with the Water Tribes separated by North and South it was really just the Fire Nation against the Earth Kingdom. Never underestimate the stubbornness of an earthbender.
