Magic Woman I can't leave you alone

[How much time had passed since she last slept? 36 hours? 48? It didn't matter, because she had yet to find a solution to the problem. Each day, new people were being affected. The waves were rippling all around the sectors, without any signs of slowing down. More importantly, people were pissed at her. Not everyone. But enough to motivate her to move a little faster.]

[Of course, that was a little difficult when one took into account two very hindering factors. For one, her translations weren't all done yet. She had pieces of the reversal ritual, but not the spell itself. For another...what little she did have, she was barely able to see anymore; her eyes were red and dry, and she looked ready to drop at any second.]

[Yet, stubbornness refused to allow herself to sleep, and so she continued to hover at her desk. Pouring over blurry words and out-of-focus diagrams.]

[Dick hadn't seen nor heard from Zatanna at all since the spell took hold. To be fair, he was a five-year-old for two days and, well, time passed a little differently for kids. But today he woke up, well, gigantic. Nineteen or twenty, he thinks. Finding clothes had been... interesting, since he could hardly fit into the clothes he had in order to shop. But now he's gotten it all sorted out.

All except for one little detail. Zatanna.

Which is why he's knocking on her door right now. And you'd better believe he brought food.]

[She jumped at the sudden sound of knocking. Who would be visiting her--oh, this had better not be one of those jerks over the network yelling at her to speed things up. Or Loki. Seriously, what was with that guy? He was like an even smaller, stranger Klarion.]

[Rubbing at her eyes, Zatanna got to her feet. She let out two yawns on her way down to the door, absently rubbing her fingers through her hair as she reached the knob.]

For the last time, I'm working on--[Her mouth was left slightly agape, frozen, when she caught a good look at the boy standing on the other side. Specifically, stared up at him. Surprise didn't even begin to cut it.] ...it.

[It was one thing to see her over the network and a completely different thing to see her in person. He stares for a brief moment before speaking.]

Working too hard. Zatanna, you look dead on your feet.

Have I told you lately that you say the sweetest things to me, Dick?

[Because, really, who doesn't want to be reminded of how awful they look when standing in front of the really, really cute guy they just so happen to be dating? In fact, as retaliation, she doesn't even invite him in right away. Leaning against the doorframe to purposely block his way, she smiles up at him wearily, stiffening a yawn.]

I'm working too hard? That's cute. Says the certifiable workaholic himself.

Is that how you talk to the guy who brought you food?

[His tone gets gentler.]

Just take five minutes.

Yes. Yes, it is.

[Though she does finally tear her sight away from his matured features, and to the bag in his hands. A genuine smile appears, touched by the gesture. He was worried about her. If she were honest with herself, she couldn't blame him.]

Do you and the food come as a package deal?

Yep. So you have to let me in.

[He's not taking no for an answer, by the way.]

[Like she could say no.]

Well, I guess you can come in, then. Since I apparently have no say in this.

[Stepping back, she gestured towards the couch in the main living room area, offering him a seat as she closed the door behind them.]

You didn't have to do this, you know. I'm fine.

[She might almost have sounded convincing, had a yawn not immediately blown her cover.]

[Walks right in.]

Glad you see it my way.

[He turns and frowns at her.]

Uh huh. Tell me, when was the last time you slept?

[Curse those involuntary bodily reactions!]

[Most of the humor of the moment faded away with that one question, though Zatanna tried to maintain an aura of causality as she shut the door behind them, closing the gap to look up at him. Way up. This would take some getting used to.]

Depends. What day is it?

[He just gives her a Look]

Food, then bed. I'm serious.

[He knows she feels bad about all of this, but he can't let her work herself to the brink of collapse.]

[She tries to roll her eyes at that Look, but can't quite seem to get herself to do it. So instead, she sighed in resignation, crossing the room and planting herself right on the floor in front of the coffee table. Neither fully agreeing to his plans, but nor was she openly protesting either.]

[Arms folded over the top, she peered up at him as she rested her chin against them.]

So, what's on the menu?

[ He seems to be making a dent in her resolve, which is promising.

He sits across from her and plops down his bag. ]

See for yourself.

[ It's the closest thing to spaghetti he can make. Vegetarian, of course. ]

[The smell hits her even before she was able to unwrap the food. Fresh. A mixture of ripe tomatoes and spices, with that hint of sugary starch behind it. Her mouth watered, and when the meal was fully uncovered, it was not disappointed.]

Did you ever know that you're my hero?

[Grinning, she looked up and reached over across the table to place a kiss of gratitude on his cheek. Her lips caught the corner of his mouth in the process, though, and she lingered a moment longer than originally intended. It was similar to the first time she had kissed "Dick"...except it wasn't similar at all. And that's what caught her so off-guard.]

...well, that was unexpected.

[That feeling. Deep in the pit of her stomach. Deep, and not entirely unwelcome.]

[Smirks]

Are we about to duet "Wind Beneath My Wings" because I forgot my karaoke machine.

[The kiss affects him too, in much the same way.

But he liked it.]

Let me guess: your lips slipped.

We could, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to subject you to that right now.

[She smirks right back at the sentiment.]

Not really. I mean, if my lips had slipped, it would have been something more like...

[And she leans forward again, this time purposely capturing his lips in hers. That same feeling swooped in again, a little stronger than before. Even when she pulled away just a few seconds later, the last word came out nearly breathless:]

...that.

[He's nearly breathless too. What's going on? He's only older, there shouldn't be an effect like this.]

Maybe they should 'slip' more often.

Don't tempt me.

[The urge was almost too much for her to resist. As it was, she couldn't stop herself from reaching up with one hand, lightly brushing the rogue bangs along his forehead. Eyes drinking in every inch of his face. Like she couldn't believe this was still the same boy.]

You feel it too, don't you?

[Whatever it was that was affecting her. She could see it in the way he was looking at her.]

Hormones, probably. We did more than get taller and, uh, more defined.

[He means both of them. But seriously Zatanna wow puberty was good to you.]

[Look who's talking.]

That's one way of putting it.

[And, even in the moment, she can't help but laugh at his particular choice of words. A small chuckle that left her shoulders shaking. Her head dipped down a moment in recovery, and when she lifted it again, she gave a subtle jerk to throw some hair back behind her shoulder.]

[And stiffened yet another yawn.]

Your voice is deeper, too. [Random, and a bit on the airy side. The lack of sleep was really starting to get to her, and she didn't mind at all.] I like it.

[Oh you can try to distract him with kisses, Zatanna, but he does remember why he's here. Even if he forgot for a moment there.]

[He laughs in a low chuckle.] I'm just glad I got taller. I'm going to miss that when we go back to normal.

[Because they will. He has faith in her.]

[...fine. Fine. She goes as far as to sit back and take a bite of her meal.]

[Oh, wow.]

[That was actually really good.]

I'm not.

I'm going to need taller heels.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

[She'd totally rock some heels.]

[He seems a lot calmer now that Zatanna is eating.]

You say that like it's not. Then again, you wouldn't be the one wearing them.

[It's somewhat cheating when you get all the bias of the view with none of the pain that comes with it.]

[Eating is one thing that she can do quite well. As an Italian American, it was in her nature to never let a good plate of pasta go unappreciated. Tired as she was, she could have sleep-nibbled on the meal if that's what it took.]

[Besides...the sauce was basically perfect.]

This is delicious. I may refuse to eat it all just so I can have leftovers for later.
