Situation: Tu Vishan begins to dive to the ocean floor and the city of Keeliai seems unbothered by the process. Bonfire funtimes are made available to all!

[He nods.] So were you going somewhere or just walking around?

Reconnoissance. Sort of.

[Unofficial. Which was how she tended to work.]

I was hoping to find as many of the others as I could. Not everyone here can find their way around as easily as we could.

Yeah, you don't say. Who're you looking for?

Nobody in particular.

[No point in looking for any of the batfam. They usually found her instead.]

Fortunately, everyone I've run into so far seems to be okay. Aside from the lack of knowing what the heck's going on.

[imaginate]

They tend to find us. [Batman had, and Kyle looks momentarily annoyed.] The locals don't seem too affected, so I don't think we've really got anything serious to worry about.

That's been my experience, yeah. [Zatanna looks less annoyed...though her expression noticeably darkens when Kyle brings up the locals. She knows something.] I wouldn't go by what the locals say or do, honestly.

[imaginate]

[Kyle looks at her intently.] Zee, [forgive the nickname, old habits die hard] is there something I should know?

[Nothing to forgive; he wasn't the first person to ever call her that, and he most likely wouldn't be the last. Plus, he'd already admitted he had been friends with the other Zatanna.]

Call it a hunch.

[Some of that Batparanoia was starting to rub off on her, it seemed.]

All I know right now is that the kedan have a history of acting...weird...when it comes to strange things happening around here. Like they've been ordered not to react like it's anything out of the ordinary.

[imaginate]

[Kyle 'hmms'. ] What other weird stuff happened?

There were the gang wars. I wasn't here when those broke out...but I saw some of the aftermath...

[She and Jack had inadvertently come across a shop that had been all but destroyed because of it.]

Some people say it was the result of some kedan starting to break free. Realizing something's not right.

[imaginate]

[Kyle's expression darkens considerably.] Something weird in a neighbourhood like this usually means a squad of GLs being called in to fix it.

[Implied: 'And then blamed if it can't be'.]

[Not exactly the point she was trying to make...but a valid one, nevertheless.]

Far as I know, you're the first one that's shown up.

Though there must be over a hundred other foreigners here. Give or take. I haven't exactly met them all yet.

[imaginate]

[He'd been trying to find an analogue for something like this in his own experience. He pauses, thinking.]

I heard from someone that the foreigners were being assembled for some purposes, something like that. They might expect us to fix it... or they might have just brought us into a trap. [Possibly both.]

As far as I can tell, our minds aren't being messed with. Not significantly anyway. [He holds up the ring.] I'd know.

To fight, basically. Against what, we have no idea.

[She glances at the ring, trying to think back to what she knew of its powers. Combining her father's stories and the news media, however, didn't really give her much more beyond the usual flight and construct abilities.]

How?

[imaginate]

Willpower, remember? We GLs are pretty good at resisting.

Oh, right. That.

[She would argue about how Magic could easily override Willpower...but that would just be bragging.]

[imaginate]

[He knows that look, and he purses his lips slightly, remembering when his Zatanna had wiped the memories of supervillains.] I trust you not to do that, okay? Magic can't hold me for long.

[No, really, Kyle, do what? What did you think she would actually pull? What did the OTHER her pull?]

Use magic to try and mess with me. [Beat.] Other people have tried.

Define "messing with".

[For her, it would be something minor. Like a fairly harmless prank or other means of trolling. She wasn't really thinking much beyond that.]

[imaginate]

Like... affecting me in any way. [He's dead serious now.] Batman would flip out at both of us even if it was something like making me buy you ice cream every day or something.

Why would I do that? I work in an Ice Cream...

[She trails off, and suddenly, the joke is over. Her face darkens.]

Wait...she did something to you, didn't she? [The other "her"]

[imaginate]

What? No! She'd never. [She'd only done it to supervillains... and Bruce.]

Then why would you even think I would?

The worst I've ever done was a little truth spell. And that was after Miss Martian's telepathy failed.

[imaginate]

Even that--[... wow well done Rayner, he mutters internally. Now you freaked her out.

He pinches the bridge of his nose - or he would, if the mask wasn't in the way.]

Sorry. I didn't mean to worry you. I just don't deal well with people doing that to me. [The ring reacts to his subconscious as well, and Kyle knows his anger.]
