OOC INFORMATIONCITY OF KEELIAIINSIDE THE BOTTLETHE WORLD EATER

Arriving in Kithika is unpleasant for the most part. Transport through the glass vessel deposits you in the middle of a thick and murky swamp, with air so hot and humid it feels as though one is breathing through a wet towel. This is a place of perpetual night and there are no celestial bodies visible overhead through the twisted vines to break up the blackness, making the only light visible that which comes clumps of marsh fungus that emit a steady glow in a variety of muted colours: pale blue, whitish green, watery mauve. The only other light comes from those who can generate it themselves and that will reveal numerous broad-leaved trees, in some places standing too thick to move through. Below, knee-deep water laps in swirls at their legs, accompanied by the occasional slithery feel of something moving in the bracken against wet limbs, gone before it can be identified. A variety of strange noises from creatures of the swamp fill the air with buzzing and hoarse croaking, interrupted by the screech of mosquitoes the size of hummingbirds darting past and hungry for a meal.

OOC NOTE: Characters will not be able to progress past the Temple and the Grounds for 48 IC hours after which point, the way to continue onward to find the dragon will be discovered. The second log will be posted on the 17th, to help spread out the tagging. Thank you!

"Does the Wizard of Oz count?" Nita wrinkled her nose and shrugged. "I'm from Atlantis. Trees are not my specialty. But if we hit any coral reefs, I'm your gal."
doc_holi: (oh... WOOPS)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-15 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Atlantis?" Okay, that's interesting. "The underwater city? That's amazing. It's just a myth where I'm from... or what we believe to be a myth."

Yes, Holiday. Strike up a conversation in a swamp.
littlecousin: (how long 'til THIS atlantis blows up?)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-16 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I get that a lot." Another shrug. "We're pretty reclusive, so if there is an Atlantis in your universe, they might just be keeping to themselves."

Which, if Nita were to be pressed on the matter, she might admit was a good thing. Atlantis was also pretty warlike, and relations with the surface had never been smooth.
doc_holi: (shock)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-16 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Really? I suppose that makes sense in some way." It would be weird for them to come out of hiding now, but one would think it would have been better to come about years ago... Ah well.

"That's interesting, if nothing else."
littlecousin: (pic#6533370)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-18 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, anyway." Nita was a little bored with having the Atlantis-is-real conversation with everyone she met. Not to the point where she'd be rude about it, but really, there was only so much to say.

"You got any ideas better than just smashing our way through?"
doc_holi: (oh... WOOPS)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-18 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No one could blame Nita for that. Holiday turned her attention back to the trees.

"I'm sure there's some sort of pattern or nature to these. The trees are too aware. There has to be something that repels them. Maybe fire?" Or maybe something in the environment? She looked around.
littlecousin: (shh i'm thinkin')

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-21 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, Torch wasn't having much luck with that." She indicated Jim, whose flames had been making the trees scream in protest.

"Still, you're probably onto something. Quests like this usually have their solutions lying around somewhere." In a universe where gods were real and sometimes showed up to offer advice to kings of Atlantis, you got used to playing by mythological rules when you had to.
doc_holi: (oh... WOOPS)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-22 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, fire was out. Holiday looked around the area for anything that could give them a clue. Something that none of the tress touched. She moved closer to nearby growth floating in the water.

"Maybe they don't like this fungus. None of the trees are touching it."
littlecousin: (umm...)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-22 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe don't touch it with your bare hands," Nita cautioned. With another muttered "gross," she broke off a tree limb and used it to prod at the phosphorescent clump.

"Huh, did that look like it moved a little?" Of course it moved, Nita, you poked it with a stick. "...The branch, I mean. Not the glowy stuff."
doc_holi: (blank)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-22 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
If the trees weren't touching it, Holiday wasn't about to.

Though, she... did give the tree branch an odd look. "I... didn't see anything... Why? What do you mean?" It's just a tree branch. Well, those trees have been kinda weird so far. Holiday watched closer.
littlecousin: (paparazzi? in new york?!)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-22 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Like the branch doesn't want to touch it." The trees were screaming bloody murder whenever someone got close to them with superpowers, so Nita didn't find it completely weird that they might have some volition.

More slowly this time, Nita held the broken branch out towards the fungus, and sure enough, the twigs at the end curled out of the way in an attempt to avoid contact with the glowing mass.

"...Okay, that's pretty freaky."
doc_holi: (shock)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-22 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow. Pretty freaky was an understatement. Holiday even stepped back a bit.

"... Well, I think I know of a way to get through these trees." She crouched down to get a better look at the stuff. "Now, how do we transport it without touching it?"
littlecousin: (mosquitoes the size of baguettes)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-22 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can try picking it up if it comes to that..." Nita trailed off as she looked around the swamp for a solution. Her gaze lit on some kind of creeping vine wrapped around a nearby tree. "...but I think I've got this, if you don't mind sitting tight for a couple minutes." She waded over to the tree and started tugging at the vine, muttering as it came free and brought a shower of Spanish moss and bits of bark onto her head with it.

"Not that I want to do these creepy trees any favors, but..." Nita shrugged. She wanted the vine more than she wanted to spite some maybe-sentient trees.
doc_holi: (keep moving on)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-22 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"We should keep that as a last resort." Nita was obviously stronger, but Holiday still wasn't comfortable risking such a thing with a substance they weren't sure about.

Still, she watched as the other woman tore a vine from a nearby tree. "At least it's only the trees that seem to be aware." Sentient vines just sounded scary.
littlecousin: (pic#6533396)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-22 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Even if it was, like, acidic or something, I could carry it for a while. I'm hard to hurt." As she spoke, Nita ran the length of the vine through her hands, pulling off the leaves, which left her with only the flexible stem.

"Yeah, I think that's long enough." She frowned for a moment, dredging up memories of childhood lessons, and then started to weave the vine back and forth over its own length, the beginnings of a small net bag rapidly emerging from her hands.
doc_holi: (eyebrow)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-23 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
"That is pretty incredible." Didn't change that Holiday was wary, but she certainly had more confidence in Nita. And then- "You can weave, too?"

This one's full of surprises.
littlecousin: (pic#6533403)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-23 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Nita blinked, confused by why Holiday would think that...despite the half-finished bag she was holding. "I know how to repair nets from my gladiator training when I was a kid. The kind of bag kelp harvesters make uses all the same techniques and it's easy--I think everybody in Atlantis, even the really useless courtiers, could probably make one if they had to. It's good to know if you end up needing to cross a big stretch between settlements without a chariot or an aeromarine for whatever reason."

She might talk like a college student from New York, but Nita grew up in a very, very different culture.
doc_holi: (smile)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-23 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Holiday began smiling halfway through the explanation. "That makes a lot of sense, actually. Most people I know don't tend to weave much anymore, but it seems like a useful skill for anyone." Though, to make nets while living underwater is sure a handy reason to learn.

"It's also good to know if we ever come across a questionable substance that even trees refuse to touch."
littlecousin: (another fine mess i've gotten us into)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not like I know how to make anything else," Nita said. Learning a useful trade tended to be considered beneath the dignity of a princess, no matter her thoughts on the matter. Running a government was necessary, she supposed, but it usually felt like swimming against a powerful current. At least tradesmen had something to show at the end of the day.
doc_holi: (oh... WOOPS)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-02-25 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry?" Wait, did she just stumble over a touchy subject?
littlecousin: (pic#6533397)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-02-26 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"When I was a kid, I pretty much just learned war and statecraft." Nita, being Nita, would rather have been out playing with other children, but ha, there was no chance of that happening. "On a day-to-day basis, they're kind of useless."

She tested the construction of her improvised bag by tugging at it lightly, then started to weave in the trailing end of the vine.
doc_holi: (keep moving on)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2014-03-02 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
War and statecraft? "Are you someone of nobility then?" She could be wrong. That's just how humans did things, after all, but that was just for things like monarchies. There's a plethora of reasons.
littlecousin: (this family has good genes)

[personal profile] littlecousin 2014-03-04 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm the heir presumptive." Nita was neither arrogant nor sheepish about it; it just wasn't something important to mention until someone asked. Her cousin the king had inherited all the family's self-importance. "Heck, for a while I think I was technically regent."

Not that she remembered that, given the complicated time travel shenanigans that had governed her life immediately before arriving on Tu Vishan.
