Situation: Tu Vishan begins to dive to the ocean floor and the city of Keeliai seems unbothered by the process. Bonfire funtimes are made available to all!

Pepper Potts || Fire sector

[Pepper isn't secure with the idea of being thrust underwater on the back of a giant turtle. She's taken a short break to stand on the veranda of Stark International and watch as the water starts to slowly seep around the turtle. She tries to look unperturbed, but in truth, she's terrified. As much as she tries to hide it, her knuckles are white with how tightly she's holding the railing.]

How long is this going to last?

[The words are mumbled as she keeps her eyes on the sky.]

[ Once Jack had recovered from the horrible feeling of watching the water close over them outside the barrier, and a good talking to from Kara, he'd pushed his own discomfort as far to the back of his mind as he was able and started flying supplies to where there were bonfires being lit. He'd just dropped off another bale of warm clothes and was heading back through the Fire Sector when he caught a glimpse of someone familiar and angled against the wind to change his direction, still a good fifty feet above the Stark building. ]

Pepper!

[Pepper offers Jack a smile that doesn't really reach her eyes.]

Jack. Some weather we have, huh?

[It's the best quip she can think of, which is also the worst. Clearly she's not in form right now.]

[ He swooped down and landed lightly on the balcony next to her, the wind dissipating around them. Her attempt at a casual greeting drew a smile from him. ]

Yeah, it's wild.

[the_other_eight]

I wonder how far down it's going to go.

[She's not looking at Jack, her eyes are fixed on the growing waterline.]

Hey.

[ Jack places his hand atop of hers on the railing, though his touch is brittle-cold but his expression reassuring. ]

It'll be all right. If there were anything to worry about, the kedan would be worried about a lot more than convincing me I need a hat with ear flaps, right?

They can breathe underwater.

[Sorry Jack, Pepper doesn't look very relieved.]

Pepper... I won't let anything happen. I promise, and I don't break promises, okay?

[the_other_eight]

I trust you.

[She really does, but there's a difference between making a promise that you can keep and making a promise that ends up falling apart because the dome collapses and water fills Pepper's lungs.]

I'll just feel better once there's not so much water floating over my head.

[wintershepherd]

Me too.

[ Jack gives a brief glance upward, but he's quick to look away again. ]

Had to be water. Couldn't have been like... leaves, or something.

I would have settled for just staying above water.

[She winces as the water moves up another few inches.]

[ Pepper is a very determinedly dire lady, Jack thinks. (Of course he has no idea that most of it is deserved.) ]

Maybe you should do something to take your mind off it.

[the_other_eight]

[With all the trouble that Tony's gotten into, and by proxy, gotten her into in the past couple of years? This is mild worry Jack.]

Maybe I could take up scuba diving.

[More sarcasm. Hey, it's her coping mechanism. Actually, she's starting to wonder if they sell air tanks in the water district. Or maybe even a deep sea diving bell. One of those nice roomy ones ... with a heater.]

[Much to the chagrin of nearly half the adults she knew, Zatanna had made a point of scouting out as much of the Turtle as she could in hopes of finding some answers. So far, not much luck. But it did put her in a position where, while doing a round high above the Fire Sector, she was able to catch a glimpse of Pepper's white-knuckled grip and worried expression.]

[Remembering the older woman from their last conversation together, she decided on a brief detour, swinging downward to offer as reassuring a smile as she could muster. While hovering fairly high off the ground, holding a small glowing globe of pure magic.]

Hey...Miss Potts, was it?

[Pepper looked up to find Zantanna looking down at her. She did her best to give the girl a reassuring smile.]

It was. What are you doing out Zantanna?

Same as everyone else, I guess. Trying to figure out what's going on.

[She lowers the ball a little bit, dimming its power so that it didn't shine too brightly on either of them.]

What about you?

Trying to figure out how to breathe underwater.

[Her eyes flick to the water again before back to Zantanna.]

[It was only partially a joke; her first instinct was to reach for the necklace buried beneath her coat. But she resisted the urge.]

[She gets a dry laugh from Pepper.]

If only.

Besides, I don't think we'll need the gills just yet; from what I've been able to tell, the barrier's holding pretty strong up there.

Until it doesn't.

[Pepper is a practical woman. She knows that nothing will last forever.]

I wonder how deep this thing is going to go.

I don't know. It's already gotten so dark down here, I can barely see two feet in front of me without a light. How much further do we need to go?

Personally I think we were fine on the surface.

Personally, I think most people here would've been even finer back home.

[...okay, maybe not her.]

Then again, I can't really accuse this place of being boring, that's for sure.

I can't say I wouldn't appreciate going back home myself.

[But as long as she has Stark International and Tony here she's actually fine either way. The gripe is more just for show.]
