Situation: Tu Vishan begins to dive to the ocean floor and the city of Keeliai seems unbothered by the process. Bonfire funtimes are made available to all!

And getting answers out of her is next to impossible, right? [He gives a little laugh.] Yeah, probably. I'm over in Earth though so I'll just have to find a way to make it work there.

[shootingshields]

We'll know things when we need to, apparently. [But she nods.] It's a bit of a trip to carry enough wood without a cart of some kind, as well.

[alpha_squad_leader]

[He sighs.] When does that ever work out well? It just helps create mistrust.

[Vic shakes his head.] It's okay. I've got a big guy made of rocks to carry it for me.

[shootingshields]

It would seem they're confident enough in our potential agreement to help, despite that.

Made of rocks? [It's more curious than disbelieving - months on a giant turtle have left her a little more open minded.]

[alpha_squad_leader]

Eventually, it'll come back to bite us all in the rears. I just know it.

Yep. He's a mutant like me.

[shootingshields]

I wouldn't be surprised if it did. [She prefers optimism, really, but in this case that seems impossible.]

Mutant. [She repeats it, still curiously.] You'll have to forgive me; as far as I'm aware, mutants aren't a thing back home.

[alpha_squad_leader]

[Victor nods.] Yeah, mutants. And it's alright. A mutant is just a human with a special gene that gives them powers.

[shootingshields]

Born that way, I assume? Any particular kind of powers? [She's seen a variety of those on the turtle.]

[alpha_squad_leader]

Not usually. Typically the gene doesn't become active until puberty. It's only a rare few that have powers since birth and even then it's typically people with physical mutations. [Like him.] Well, pretty much any power actually.

[shootingshields]

I see. My knowledge of genetics is very basic, with only a little experience as an outsider in some more detailed aspects, so you'll have to forgive too many questions.

[alpha_squad_leader]

It's alright. I don't mind answering what I can. I'm not an expert in genetics or anything though, I only know what they taught us in science class.

[shootingshields]

[She nods.] What sort of powers are or can be developed?

[alpha_squad_leader]

Like I said, just about anything. On my training team alone back home there was me, someone that could swim through solid matter like it was water and cause it to disintergrate, a guy that could shrink down to only a few inches tall, a girl that could stretch her body like rubber, someone that could cover himself in nearly invulnerable armor plates, and a girl that could control machines with her mind. And our adviser could move at superspeed. And that's only one team.

[shootingshields]

[Well that certainly gets an eyebrow quirk, but it was the examples she was looking for.]

That's quite a variety. [And of course, not inclusive of others.] What are the teams and training for? Or is it just to get a handle on abilities?

[alpha_squad_leader]

Well, I went to a school for mutants. A place to teach us how to control our abilities and use them to help people. We were being taught how to defend ourselves too. The teams were to help with that and I'm pretty sure it was to make it easier on our advisers too. Breaking us up into smaller groups made it easier for them to help us learn I think.

[shootingshields]

[She nods.] It's good to hear such a place existed for you. And yes, I've found smaller groups works wonders for training regardless of the nature of it. It's a lot easier for the individual to focus, as well.

[alpha_squad_leader]

I'm glad the place existed too. The place had it's flaws...a lot of them, believe me. [He shakes his head.] But it did my friends and I a lot of good too.

[shootingshields]

No institution is perfect. But the ability to critique without horrible repercussions bodes better than places that lack that.

[alpha_squad_leader]

Definitely. There were still people it was better to avoid critiquing around but for the most part you didn't get thrown out or whatever for saying anything bad about the place.

[shootingshields]

Some do take it better than others. I find people who can much more tolerable than those who can't.

[alpha_squad_leader]

Same here. It's just easier to deal with them and not having to worry about walking on egg shells.

[Victor goes quiet a moment, just glancing into the fire. When it hits him that he doesn't even know the name of the person he's talking to, Vic offers an apologetic smile.]

My name's Victor, by the way. Nice to meet you.

[shootingshields]

Exactly.

[She's not terribly unused to conversation that come before proper introductions - or ones that even conclude without one. She smiles back, congenially, and offers a hand.] Agent Peggy Carter. It's a pleasure, Victor.

[alpha_squad_leader]

[Victor shifts a little before carefully shaking the offered hand. He's being extra careful because he's using the hand attached to the big spiky arm.]

Agent? What're you an agent of?

[shootingshields]

[She does notice the caution involved, but she doesn't give any sign that she has or ask about it at all.]

The Strategic Scientific Reserve. Very few seem aware of it here, but it's not all that surprising for a number of reasons.

Strategic Scientific Reserve? I'm guessing it's some kind of top secret military thing?
