Satellite Crash Event

Crash Landing | Salvage Party | Shocking Spectres

Questions | Fire Sector | Earth Sector | Metal Sector | Water Sector | Wood Sector | Outlying Areas

The early morning hours of May 21st are broken by the sound of a low lying explosion and a veritable rain of fiery bits and bobs such as molten hot metal and space debris. Those out and about in the very early morning (three hours before dawn) see a meteoric shape streaking overhead and leaving a debris trail. Those interested in following it may find themselves distracted by the debris raining down across Tu Vishan, starting fires and damaging buildings turtlewide. Tu Vishan certainly is, for the great turtle grinds to a halt amidst all this and a trace of concern for the little ones on his shell can be felt in the minds of many.

Black smoke billows in huge, choking clouds from the smoldering rooftop, caught in a sudden breeze that teases his bandana tails. He has no idea what the shell that thing is, but it can't be good news.

Teeth grit, he prepares for the worst.

"Five kedan," he answers, dropping off to ground level. "Three kids, two adults."

He's seen them all coming and going, and Leo knows about his little habit of watching people. It's a hobby bred from curiosity and paranoia, with more than a little ninja training sprinkled in. And today, it's paid off. He hasn't seen anyone come out of there yet, and that roof's gonna collapse any second.

"I think they're still in there!" He yells, landing in a crouch. From there he can see the whole freaking place is full of smoke, and he can hear kids' voices inside.

He already feels like an idiot, busting out one of the windows and disappearing into the smothering gloom. But he doesn't care. It's not like he's just gonna leave them there.

[UM NO because Raph LEFT. Which isn't remarkable to Mike, but it definitely doesn't sit right with Leo, who's certain his brother wouldn't have taken off like that if Mike had stayed out of it.

Leo's eyes snap to Mike's when he hits resistance, but he's not interested in a lesson in hygiene (although he does take it, and his eyes narrow further in recognition). There is plenty of blame to go around here; Leo sees a significant portion to lay on Mike's shell and it's all carried in his eyes. Mike wants to meet his gaze? He can have it.

Mike split before they had any sort of plan or coordination, which meant Leo felt responsible for going after him so that he wouldn't get killed. True, he wasn't responsible for Leo's decision to have Raph and Mikey take on a separate effort, but needing to make that split-second decision didn't help.

And then the knife. Raph wouldn't have left otherwise, Leo was sure of it. He was getting ready to stand down, accept that his brother fucked up and that he KNOWS he fucked up, forgive him because Raph would probably never forgive himself. They always worked things out somehow.

But the real thing that's driving Leo's fury is that he lost control of the situation. If he was a better leader, he'd have stopped Mike from running or made a different judgment call. If he'd reacted faster to the knife, maybe he could've stopped Raph from running. At the core of the matter, Leo blames himself and there isn't much that pushes his buttons worse than that.

So there's an inferno of blame and a blizzard of cold fury behind Leo's blue eyes, projected squarely at his cousin - and when he speaks the blue turns solid white.]

Get. Going.

[Leo wants this situation to himself. He needs to be in complete control.

Get out.

He doesn't blink.]

Leonardo is right behind Raph through the window. The first thing he registers upon landing inside is how unbearably hot it is; the room is sweltering, just all hot air trapped in a closed space. Smoke belches from the debris of the gnarled meteorite, quickly filling up the room, and a blaze of fire has already engulfed the furniture, turning the entire living room into a cage of smog and flame.

Five kedan. Unless the adults have night jobs, everyone's bound to still be in bed at this time of morning. Leo's eyes rake across the mirage of heat, spotting the crumbled hallway opening against the far side of the room. Three kids, two adults. Adults probably share the same room; possibly the same with the kids, if they're all young enough. He doesn't have time to ask. He'll find out soon enough.

"Split up," Leonardo barks, and that's all he says before dodging around the wall of flame surging towards them.

Dunno. But we've gotta try to find someplace. He's not fit to just sit out here, not with all this going on.

[She keeps her tone even and patient, but doesn't try whispering or hiding what she says so the kedan can't hear. There's no point in it, she'd want someone to say these things to her face if she was in their place. So she helps Finnick support and carry the guy while also leading the way at the same time.

Her eyes look over every single thing they pass, trying to find somewhere they can store him so they can get back out there and keep helping.

Inside, there's almost zero visibility. Smoke rakes at his lungs, makes his eyes water. But Raph doesn't need to see to keep moving. He feels his way around the bulky shadows of furniture, dodging falling ceiling tiles toward the sound of voices.

He finds them on the stairs, three figures stumbling their way toward the exit. One of the adults and two of the older children. Two more are still missing, and the woman is screaming that they're both still upstairs.

Raph doesn't hesitate, leaping over the crumbling railing and barreling up the rickety stairs.

[It was Leo who brought Mike into this. It was Leo who decided to follow him. And yes, Mike will readily admit that he owes Leo one for the warning that saved his tail from the falling tree branch, but it's not Mike's fault that Mikey got hurt.

It's also not Mike's fault that Raph went AWOL. And no amount of glaring from Leo is going to convince Mike otherwise.

Mikey is hurt and his wounds haven't been dressed and his brothers go off into the kitchen to yell at each other? With a concussed kid in the other room? And then Leo has the gall to ask Mike how Mikey's doing right in front of the kid? Did Leo honestly expect the truth?

Oh hey, I think he's probably got some internal bleeding somewhere, maybe. Only time will really tell though, we'll just have to see if it's hard for him to breath as his whole internal cavity just fills up with blood. Oh and he might be brain damaged too, but I'm not entirely sure because DAMN IT, LEO. I'M A MEDIC, NOT A VETERINARIAN.

Even as Leo somehow manages to conjure a voice with the gravitas Mike's Leo uses to order Raph out of the house to cool off, all Mike can think is how not ready these guys are. How he understands why it is that their Splinter kept them below ground for as long as he did.

Mike doesn't blink, but he does look away. His attention diverted by Mikey's still form as much as his unhappiness at the situation at hand...with all its various nooks and crannies.

For every step forward Mike has with this Leo, there's always seems to be two steps back.]

Don't worry, Mikey. I've got a friend that'll help. And she's cute too.

[Mike turns to leave, never looking back towards Leo. In fact, the only thing he does before heading back towards the kitchen is pause at the room's climate control. He turns the thermostat up to 85, and then makes his way towards the very same window Raph fled through.]

[ Mikey's not totally with it right now, his head is pounding and his shell is sending sharp spikes of pain through his limbs and he just wants to sleep and stop arguing please.

He reaches out to try and grab Leo's arm, misses, then tries again. ]

Leo. S'not his fault.

[ C'mon bro, don't be mad. Mike's like, family and stuff. ]

Through the billowing smoke, Leo just manages to catch Raph's form disappearing up the stairs. For a split moment he wishes he had gone up instead - he weighs less, he's a better option when the floor could just give out underfoot - but he doesn't have time to dwell on it, so instead he trusts his brother to be okay, to make sure the two innocents upstairs will be okay too.

The kedan and her children are stumbling down the last few steps, linked together by their hands. The woman staggers down the final one, her soot-covered hand flying up to mask a choked cough, and the two kids are wracked by wheezes that sound like they don't quite fill up their lungs. She looks up and sees Leo, her cracked lips forming around a soundless plea - save them save them save them

Without hesitation, Leo swoops down and grabs a kedan child in each arm, ignoring their disoriented cries of alarm as he lifts and hugs them against his plastron. They're young and light; he can easily carry more weight. He turns to shout at the woman to climb onto his shell - but then a flaming beam crashes down from the ceiling, erecting a pillar of fire between them, and the woman is flinging her scorched arm towards the window and screaming 'Go, go, go!'

So he goes. The children begin squirming and wailing for their mother, but Leo sharply turns on his heels and sprints for the nearest exit, dodging flames and raining clumps of plaster and wood. When he finally makes it to the window, he hugs the children tightly against his chest and hurls himself through, the glass shattering and cutting shallow gashes into his shoulder.

He hits the soft, cool grass rolling. When he straightens up and lets go of the kids, they're still wailing, still alive, and he pushes them beneath a large tree.

"Stay here," he grits out, roughly wiping a smudge of ash off of one's cheek with his thumb. "Watch the sky. I'll be right back."

The child cries, but his older sister pulls him into her chest and presses her cheek against his smooth scalp. In the next moment, Leo turns and jumps back through the window into the raging fire.

Depends on what you're payin' for. [He manages a laugh and looks up at the sky, deflecting another piece of debris before noting a few more spiralling down.]

[Saving the Water Sector for last was a good call on Korra's part judging by how little damage there was. There was an occasional fire here and there, but they were minor at best and well handled by the kedan firefighting force. What a day it had been, especially after her run in with Amon at the Earth Sector. Giving a huge sigh she sat herself down next to one of the units and put her back against its wall. Her eyes drifted upwards at the night sky that cradled a waxing gibbous moon with thin clouds.]

Oh sure, now you come out. [She said with an amused chuckle. Just then she heard a door being slammed open from the side of the building which brought her attention back down to Keeliai.[] No, no, that’s okay. Why would I want a quiet moment after all that insanity. [Korra muttered as she stood back up on her feet and adjusted the leather skin tied around her waist.]
alphatar: (Pleading nervous)

[personal profile] alphatar 2013-05-28 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay, now she just has some foot in her mouth, great.] Oh-uh, well, I just assumed by the way you were asking about it…? [Pathetic answer is pathetic.]

This? Oh no, I don’t think so. I have no idea what this is, but it’s definitely not the thing that’s making Tu Vishan sick. [Recollecting that dream is easy, she thinks about it fairly often.] There’s this kind of essence, not exactly a spirit though, that’s making Asti sick and it’s been getting worse. Or so I’ve heard. So what I think is that it’s going to show up to finish him off. After all, I think it’s the thing that’s killed off all his brothers and sisters. [That can’t do anything but bring her down some.]

Either way I don’t know of any way to fight it…

[If this was a war, Prussia might have understood--even a little. People get crazy during war. But this is ridiculous. A crisis happens and the first thing they do is try to take advantage of it. Pieces of shit. He punches one of them in the face and elbows another in the jaw. Sure, his hand-to-hand isn't super graceful or flashy, but he's been doing it for long enough that he's gotten pretty damn good at it.

He's busy kicking one of them while they're down to make sure they remember next time they think about trying to do stupid shit like this! He turns his head just in time to some guy coming up from the other side. Someone else to fight? Maybe he should have been paying attention to the one coming up behind him instead.]
michaeljangelo: (Shocked)

How dare you bring prose here! HOW DARE YOU!

[personal profile] michaeljangelo 2013-05-28 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[You know what's funny? How you always find what you're looking for, the moment you stop looking for it.

Mike had searched Tu Vishan high and low for Korra, but he always seemed to be fifteen minutes behind "the pushy girl in the blue leathers." Eventually he'd just given up and just returned to his apartment in the Water Sector. If he couldn't bring Mikey back the healer he was sent to find, the least he could do was bring back some decent medical supplies.

It was Mike's door doing the slamming, and it slams shut just as loudly as it was slammed open. And yes...slamming it open did cause a make-shift arrow to come flying out of the door at what would be center-of-mass for someone larger than Mike. He'll reset that trap when Mike is out of the woods.

So imagine Mike's surprise when he spots Korra standing next to his building.]

Holy hippo spit! Korra! I've been looking everywhere for you!

Once he was calm, that sounded like an excellent choice. Once he was calm.

"Come over here," Cinna said, drawing him over to a bench that had miraculously survived. "Catch your breath for a bit."

Alcuin sat, looking around at the destruction around them, shaking his head. It's hard to believe how quickly it's happened. "What fell, do you think? Could it have been a star?"
alphatar: (Caught off guard)

But I can't help myself /sob

Gah! [Yeah, she wasn't expecting someone to call out her name suddenly, let alone someone she knew. Forgive her instant foundational stance. One day she would find out why hippo spit just scared the bejeezus out of her, but not now.]

Mike! You’re alive! I had no idea this was your place. [Since she had no idea where he lived Korra had planned to just check the network for him tomorrow morning. There went that idea, and she was happy for it.] You’re in luck, I’ve been everywhere.

[Just a beat passes when:]Wait, YOU were out here while this was going on?? [She motions at the last fire being put out by the kedan off in the distance.] You could have been killed!

[And then it clicks.] Why were you looking for me?
michaeljangelo: (Skeptical)

I'm sure there's a support group for that...somewhere.

[It's odd how comforting Mike finds her fast-talking. Later, when the situation is far less dire, he's going to make her an honorary New Yorker just because.

Then she gets to the part where she's surprised Mike had left the house...]

Could have, but wasn't. At least not yet anyway. Day's not over yet. [He sighs.]

My cousin Mikey lives...lived, in the wood sector and something collapsed on him. He's hurt really bad and we could really use your help.

"Do you think there will be more?" The sky seemed calm, but the first had come with no obvious warning- at least not that he'd seen. Perhaps he could have missed it.
alphatar: (Sadly confused)

[Bam. Got her there. How could she argue with the fact that he was still alive and well?] The worst of it is over I think. Tell me that isn’t some kind of seasonal thing.

[All jokes get put on hold and her mouth falls open.] Of course I’ll help! [Leo had taught her the difference between Mike and Mikey, and she had yet to meet the latter, but that didn’t stop her from being concerned.] How bad is it?

Man, I hope not.[He mutters, his tone dark.]

[Here's where Mike runs a hand over his head, a gesture that ends with him pinching the bridge of his snout. The soot and grime smear.]

That's the thing, I don't really know. He's got a concussion that much I know, and I don't think anything's broken, but...he's down for the count.

...

And there may be some family drama that goes with that. It...ugh, it's just a thing that happens.

"Alright... careful. We don't want anything to cave in..." Back to moving debris, then. This is so far out of his area of expertise so he'll just continue to defer to Zel.
alphatar: (Pleading)

What to do when your friends and family have letters written in actionspam?

[personal profile] alphatar 2013-05-28 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[The fact there isn’t anything but seriousness in Mike’s words doesn’t ease Korra at all. Concussions she knew she could handle, but she would have to get a hands on to see what could be done about whatever other injuries he sustained.] Let me see him, all the family stuff can wait until I can at least make sure he’s stable.

[Humor is worth a shot though.] What is it with guys named Mike getting themselves hurt anyway.
michaeljangelo: (Skeptical)

Talk to your kids about the dangers of prose, before someone else does.

[That soot and grime doesn’t go unnoticed though, so she’s sure burns are involved as well.] You boys and your selfless ways. Will you ever learn that it pays to be selfish?

[She looks from the door to the arrow, or at least it kind of looks like an arrow.] Not big on having someone pop in I see.
